Can you trust your AI?
Most people trust an AI-generated answer because it sounds confident, not because it's been checked. Here's a real example of why that's a risky habit — and what a genuinely verified AI looks like next to one that isn't.
The trust most people already extend
When a well-known AI product gives you a clean, confident-sounding answer, it's natural to take it at face value — it's an AI, it must have checked. Most people don't think to ask a follow-up question, let alone re-ask the same one and compare.
We did. Asked the same question twice in one session, a major AI product gave two different numbers, plus a figure that only appeared in a generated chart, never in the original answer — and a citation to a source that doesn't actually exist as written. Nothing malicious, just a system generating a plausible-sounding story rather than reporting a checked fact.
That's the pattern worth naming: the confidence of an AI answer and the accuracy of an AI answer are two different things — and only one of them is visible on the screen.
